This Cup was donated in 1984 by Eileen Briggs, former Life Member and Vice President, in memory of her husband, Gilbert, former Life President.
A sad event in November 1982 was the death of Gilbert Briggs. With his wife, Eileen, Gilbert had joined the Club at its re-start in 1948. Committeemember, Secretary, Treasurer, and succeeding Edgar Pilgrim as President and then Life President in 1981, he made an enormous contribution to Knowle Lawn Tennis Club. In his later years he played in the Mid Week section, was a great supporter of all the Club’s activities, and was much missed.
Quick tournament rules are simple(ish) – you play 8 games per match, minimum of 3 matches. You play 4 with your partner and then swap partners and play 4 against them. You keep a tally of the games you have won. The top 4 players then go into the final.
There is a bring and share tea afterwards in the clubhouse.

Saturday 13th August 2022
On Saturday 13th August, 13 Englishmen and women, plus one Mallorcan (Elias), played tennis, not in the midday sun, but from 2pm, on one of the hottest days of the year (btw bowls was cancelled – too hot!!)
Hats off to John White, a newish member, who innocently wandered up to participate in club play and found himself joining the tournament partnered with Club Captain Karen.
The format of the tournament was pared back due to the intense heat – each pair played 2 games with their partner and 2 games against. After all Round Robin matches were completed, Sarah R and Karen S were tied on games.. a tie-break ensued to determine who would play in the final.
A competitive final was held between Mary & Olly O v Karen S & Adam T. Mary & Olly won on a tie-break – many congratulations to them!
It was lovely to welcome Verity Katuska, Leo, Charlie, Chitra and Laylani to the club – I sincerely hope that you all feel welcome to come along to other events at the club!
The tournament was followed by a splendid, delicious bring and share tea, complete with birthday cake to celebrate our vice-chair Mike Nash officially embracing OAP status.
Thanks to everyone who made the tournament a great success.
